In this study properties of fibers recycled from MDF wastes as one of the potential important resources as raw materials for MDF production were investigated. For this purpose, two different methods including ohmic heating (for 2 and 4 min) and hydrothermal method (at 105˚c for 150 min) were utilized for recycling the wastes of MDF and original fibers were studied as control sample. The chemical composition of fibers (lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose content), as effective variable on quality of fibers was measured. Also for probing the chemical characteristic of fiber surface, FT-IR test was utilized. In addition, the wettability of fibers also was determined by measuring the contact angels between fibers surface and water drop. The results showed that the chemical composition of fibers is changed within recycling process. Most changes were occurred in hemicellulose and extractives content. The results of FT-IR test revealed the existence of more carbonyl groups and furfural and lower amount of hydroxyl groups in recycled fibers compared to original fibers which caused by esterification process. The wettability of fibers was decreased after recycling process especially in hydrothermal method.

In this research, the influence of paper drying condition, as one of the most important variable in paper recycling, on the characteristics of fibers was studied. In this respect, bagasse soda pulp was collected from Pars Paper mill in Khozestan province and handsheets were made. The control hand sheet samples were dried at room temperature and the rest of the handsheets were dried using drum dryer set at 60° C for 3 hours, 100° C for 50 minutes and 120° C for 25 minutes to reach the same moisture content as the sheets dried at room temperature. Then, these handsheets were slushed in water and the pulp properties were determined. The results showed that with increasing the drying temperature, cellulose content did not change while hemicelluloses were reduced. Although the assessment of changing the lignin content with micro kappa method showed an increasing trend, but based on previous literature, it was concluded that the result are not justified. Also, the results indicated that changing the degree of polymerization and crystallinity did not show a consistent trend, showing initial reduction following by increased values. These results were attributed to interaction effect of drying temperature and time.

Cereal straws including grain sorghum varieties can be used for pulp production due to the significant amount of residual straw after harvesting. This study showed that there are no significant differences between fiber dimension and papermaking coefficients of two varieties of sorghum (Kimia and Sepideh). The average of fiber length, fiber width, lumen diameter, and cell wall thickness were measured as 1.19 mm, 23.20, 15.34, and 3.93 µm, respectively. Significant difference (P < 0.05) was found among all chemical composition of two varieties except lignin content. The average content of holocellulose, alpha-cellulose, lignin, extractive, and ash were determined as 62.13%, 37.71%, 21.05%, 9.58% and 6.97%, respectively. The result revealed that pulp strength produced from Sepideh variety was better. However it requires more intense delignification compared to Kimia variety. The highest screen yield (33.19%) was reached applying the treatment combination of 170°C, 12% NaOH, and 75 minutes from the Sepideh variety. Sorghum pulp could be combined with the virgin pulp to compensate cellulose raw material shortage in paper industry.

The characteristics of five common varieties of sugarcane cultivated in the southern Iran, including cp57-614, sp70-1143, cp69-106, cp48-103, and nco310 were evaluated. The characteristics measured were fiber dimension, papermaking coefficients, fiber yield, density and chemical component. cp69-106 revealed the longest fiber with the average length of 1.55 mm whereas cp57-614 had the shortest fiber with average length of 1.39 mm. The cp48-103 and cp69-106 were ranked as having the widest and narrowest fiber diameter as 25.38 and 20.42 micron respectively. The measurement of the density at 12% moisture content showed that sp70-1143 with 0.35g/cm-3 provide the highest value and the cp57-614 possessed the lowest density measured at 0.17g.cm-3. There existed statistically significant differences among other fiber characteristics and papermaking coefficients. In general, the result indicated that cp69-106 provides the optimal characteristics in comparison with the other varieties based on papermaking specifications.

Characteristics of pulp and paper mill solid wastes depend generally on the raw materials, stock preparation process as well as wastewater treatment plant. In order to determine the best application of paper mill solid wastes, physicochemical properties of solid waste produced in the Mazandaran Wood and Paper Industry Co. and Latif Paper Co. were analyzed. The dry content, pH, fiber dimensions, composition of organic and inorganic compounds of the both solid were analyzed. The dry content of the produced wastes in Latif and Mazandran were determined as 69.3 and 36.7 percent, respectively. The pH of both wastes was close to neutral (pH/7.0). The fiber length of Latif and Mazandaran wastes were 1.68 and 1.08 mm, respectively. In addition, the total amount of carbohydrates, glucose and mannose quantity in the Latif waste were determined as 48.09, 29.5 and 7.2 percent that were higher than that of Mazandaran waste. In the contrary, the lignin, xylose and galactose content of Mazandaran waste were determined as 15.3, 17.3 and 3.7 percent that were higher than those of Latif waste. The mineral content of Latif and Mazandarn wastes were determined 44.7 and 39.5 percent, respectively. XRF analyses revealed that the predominant elements in the incinerated ash of both wastes contained calcium oxide, aluminum oxide and silicon oxidethat can be used as raw material for lightweight concrete and zeolite synthesis.

Oil seed rape (Brassica napus) planting is increasing as the Iranian Ministry of Agriculture Jehad policy to provide supply of oil food in Iran. The objective of this study is utilization of rapeseed straw as a considerable raw material for paper industry whereas there is shortage of lignocellulosic material in Iran. Sampling was carried out from two varieties of oil seed rape, Hiola 401 and PF, based on initial compatibility experiments and yield in Mazandaran province from Baye-colla research station. The results show that at least 4 ton/hect. oven dry rapeseed straws are available. There were significant differences between fiber width, lumen diameter, ash and extractive contents in two varieties. Rapeseed straw as a lignocellulosic material was achieved at 10 score according to the five characteristics consisting of phytology, fiber dimension, fiber yield, chemical components and appearance feature. This means more studies are necessary to make a final assessment.

Cross sectional disks were cut at breast height from three 17-year-old trees of E.camaldulensis grown in Pasand research station in Mazandaran province. Ring width, wood density, and fiber dimension were measured for each two rings from pith to the bark. Overall average disks, fiber length, fiber width, lumen diameter, and cell wall thickness were measured at 758, 15.93, 8.63, and 3.65 micrometer respectively. Mean values for the oven dry and basic. Density was 0.708 g/cm3 and 0.552 g/cm3. Cross sectional \ growth rate and wood production for the trees were measured at 11.1 mm and 12.3 m3/ha./year respectively. Chemical compositions of the wood consist or cellulose, lignin, extractives (in acetone soluble) and ash were measured at 47.44%, 30.87%, 6.96%, and 0.27% respectively. The result showed that E.camaldulensis is classified as short fiber hardwood with low frequency. Fiber dimensions and density slightly increased from pith to the bark. There was high significant correlation between cell wall thickness and density, while; there was no significant correlation between ring width and the others. Among the properties studied, cell wall thickness and fiber length showed the most variations.

In this study, anatomical, physical, pulping and paper making properties of Eucalyptus microtheca grown in Farse province is investigated. Eight trees were sampled for this study. The average dry and critical specific gravity of 8 samples were measured at 0.85 and 0.88 for heartwood and 0.8 and 0.75 for sapwood respectively. Mean of fiber length, diameter and cell wall thickness were measured at 0.78 mm, 15.68 mm and 4.560 mm for heartwood respectively. The corresponding figures for sapwood are 0.84 mm, 15.72 mm and 4.88 mm.Pulps were produce by two processes, Kraft (as a chemical process) and NSSC (as a semi-chemical process). Pulp properties of these two processes were compared. Yield and Kappa number of Pulp depend on cooking condition are 36.42-53.25 percent and 21.68-87.68 for Kraft Pulps and 64.59-70.91 percent and 130-189 for NSSC pulp respectively. Physical properties of pulps consist of burst and tear Index and breaking length were measured at 3.90-4.84 kPa.m2/g and 8.34-11.01 mN.m2/g and 5.36-6.94 Km for Kraft Pulps respectively. These properties for NSSC Pulp are 1.72-2.89 kPam2/g, 7.46-8.26 mNm2/g and 4.11-5.14 Km.

In this investigation some anatomical, chemical and pulping suitability of two Iranian hardwood species which predominate in the Caspian forests were examined. The species are carpinus betulus (Hornbeam) and parotia persica (Ironwood).The results of this study revealed that:The average fiber length of carpinus betulus is 1.4 mm., fiber diameter 18 mm, and cell wall thickness 3.37 mm, while inparotia persica, fiber length, cell diameter and cell wall thickness are 1.34 mm, 17.3 mm and 3.48 mm respectively.The overall average of cellulose content: of carpinus betulus and Parotia persica were measured at 48.5, and 46.1 percent, and the lignin content at 17.5 and 21.5 percent respectively.The wood of each of the above species was cooked by means of a kraft process without difficulty but, there was a slight decrease in yield and kappa number with increase active alkali.The pulping yield with active alkali of14% was about 49.6 and with 20% was 43.44 percent, while the pulping yield of parotia persica in active alkali of 14% was 43.04 and in 20% about 37.79 percent. Thus, it may be concluded that for production of wrapping paper from carpinus betulus and parotia percica, using active alkali of 14% might give better quality paper and for production of printing paper from these two species active alkali of 20 percent might be desirable.
