This research and aim was using Bamboo and Reed CMP pulp for newsprint production. For this purpose, some chips of bamboo stem in the west of Mazandaran were randomly chosen. Then CMP Pulps were prepared at the yield 85%in 120 minutes(Bamboo) and 31 minutes(Reed), by using cooking conditions of Wood and Paper Industries of Mazandaran 60 gr/m2 newsprint handsheets were prepared from the Bamboo and Reed CMP and Mill(MWPI) CMP pulps, first in a separate and then mixed way with 25,50,75 percents. Then the optical and mechanical properties were measured and compared according by using TAPPI Standard test methods. The results showed that the most strength of the burst, breaking length, tensile, tear strength, yellowness and opacity were in the handsheets obtained from 100% the bamboo CMP pulp and the lowest strength (except brightness) was in Reed CMP pulp. The results also pointed out that the above-mentioned all strengths (except brightness) can be improved by using 25-100% of the bamboo CMP pulp, too. The results also indicated that 25-100% of the bamboo CMP pulp and 25% of the Reed CMP pulp can use for newsprint production.

The impact of reeds residue addition on physical and mechanical properties of particleboard made from pomegranate pruning was investigated. Laboratory particleboard was made applying one of the three levels of press time (3, 4 and 5 minutes) and one of the four levels of reed and pomegranate pruning mixture (1-100% reeds; 2- 75% reeds + 25% pomegranate pruning; 3- 50% reeds + 50% pomegranate pruning and 4- 25% reeds + 75% pomegranate pruning). Boards were made in three replicate and 36 boards were made. Boards were tested using relevant EN standard and results were analyzed based on complete randomized design (CRD) under factorial experiment. Results revealed that increasing of pomegranate pruning in the wood mixture imposed positive effect on MOR, MOE, IB and thickness swelling of the particleboard. The relevant values of MOR, and MOE of the boards produced using 25% reeds + 75% pomegranate pruning were determined as 16.20 MPa and 2533 MPa respectively. Also thickness swelling after for 2 and 24 hours soaking in water decreased from 17.51 and 33.21% to 9.33 and 16.84% respectively. Internal bond strength (IB) of boards made applying 3 minutes press time (0.17 MPa.) was higher than boards made pressed for either 4 or 5 minutes, which indicates that 3 minutes press time is the appropriate time to approach maximum MOR and minimum thickness swelling after 24 hours soaking in water.

The common reed, P.australis, covers vast region in south of Iran. Specially, there is possibility of executing harvest in Hoor-Alazim canebrake as a reed natural provenance. It has good properties for papermaking in comparison of typical nonwood materials. Chips were pulped using typical kraft, soda and NSSC processes. Standard testing of pulp properties was made using TAPPI procedures. Pulps were beaten in a PFI mill to 400m.l.csf freeness level. Handsheets were made from the refined reed pulps for measuring strengths. Screen yield and kappa number of soda pulp were about similar to kraft pulp. NSSC pulp has lower kappa number than the soda at the equivalent screen yield. Energy consumption for beating from kraft, soda and NSSC pulps reduced respectively. Initial freeness of reed pulp was near to hardwood typical, thus good drainage and runnability on reed papermaking is expectable. The physical properties of reed handsheets were higher than newsprint and fluting pulps of Mazandaran Company. Overall, soda and NSSC reed pulps can be used in producing of newsprint and fluting papers based on the properties.
