In this study pulp and hand sheets paper characteristics of Salix nigra wood kraft and soda pulp and paper were investigated. Average density of dry and bulk density wood were determined 0.35 and 150 kg/m3 and average fiber dimension consist of fiber length, fiber diameter were measured, 1100 and 30 µm, respectively. The chemical composition were determined as cellulose 42%, lignin 28% and extractive 4%. In order to coocking and pulping, Kraft (Sulfate) and soda process were used. For comparison of fiber dimensions, physical properties and chemical composition of the mean and standard deviation, yields of pulp in the form of a factorial randomized complete block design test, the strength properties of handsheets table ANOVA and for group means of the Duncan were used. All paper strengths of two hour cooking show better results than one hour cooking times, and all paper strengths of 22% alkaline show better result than 18%, also all paper strengths of 100% mixture show better result than 25% mixture (100% mixture only contain kraft pulpof salix nigra). The results of hand sheet strength indicated that Kraft pulp of salix nigra wood will provide a suitable to mix with short fiber hard wood pulp.

In this study, pulp and handsheets characteristics of radiata pine wood kraft pulp was evaluated. The ratiata pine wood was collected from Chamestan Noor Research Station. Average dry and basic specific gravity of wood were determined as 0.342 and 0.308 g/cm3 and average fiber (tracheid) dimension including fiber length, fiber diameter, lumen diameter and cell wall thickness were measured as 2460, 40.35, 33.17 and 3.59 µm, respectively. The chemical composition was determined as holocellulose 72.07%, alfa cellulose 43.41%, lignin 29.95%, ash 0.50 % and extractive as 1.75%. Kraft (Sulfate) process was applied for cooking and pulping the wood. A factorial randomized complete block design test was conducted to compare the fiber dimensions, physical properties, chemical composition and the yield of the pulp. To examine strength properties of handsheets, ANOVA statistical analysis was used and for grouping the means Duncan test were applied. The minimum and maximum yield and kappa number of these pulps were measured at 40.33%, 50.43% and 33.89, 60.22, respectively. The results of handsheet strength measurement indicated that radiata pine wood kraft pulp provides suitable substitute for imported long fiber pulp to be mixed with short fiber hardwood pulp.

This research was carried out with the aim of determining dielectric properties of bagasse unbleached soda pulp, long fiber kraft pulp and a mixture of both (20% kraft + 80% bagasse soda). The hand-sheets with 60 g/m2 basis weight were made after adjusting the freeness of pulps at levels of 200 ± 25 ml and 400± 25 ml and dried under mild condition around zero moisture content. Then the impregnation processes were carried out with mineral oil under vacuum at certain temperature. Finally the dielectric properties of impregnated papers including capacitance, insulation resistance, dielectric constant, and loss tangent were measured. The results showed that the refining give rise to enhance the dielectric properties in particular capacitance value. The dielectric properties of oil impregnated paper also increased. According to the preliminary results, unbleached soda bagasse pulp and its mixture with kraft pulp (20% Kraft -80% bagasse soda) found to be the suitable alternative with respect of dielectric applications for replacing kraft pulp, providing successful performance of the aging test.

Global concerns for preservation of forests and elimination of pollution from pulping and papermaking processes has led us to explore alternate fibrous resources other than wood and new environmentally begin pulping and bleaching processes for papermaking without sacrificing quality. Various alternate fibrous resources such as agricultural residues are already in use in many countries and considerable research have been undertaken to produce pulps by conventional and non-conventional processes. Wheat straw has high quantity among agricultural residues in Iran. Kraft, Soda and Ethanol-alkali pulping were carried out after sampling and preparing of wheat straw. Retention of carbohydrates is improved compared to the alkaline pulping processes, resulting in about 8 to 15 % higher yield at the same level of residual lignin. There was lower energy consumption for refining Ethanol-alkali pulps. There were no statistical differences among the physical properties. The strengths of Ethanol-alkali pulps consist of tear index, burst index and breaking length were lower than alkaline pulps, but all of the strength properties were higher than kraft and liner paper except tear index that addition of some long fiber can solve the problem.

The common reed, P.australis, covers vast region in south of Iran. Specially, there is possibility of executing harvest in Hoor-Alazim canebrake as a reed natural provenance. It has good properties for papermaking in comparison of typical nonwood materials. Chips were pulped using typical kraft, soda and NSSC processes. Standard testing of pulp properties was made using TAPPI procedures. Pulps were beaten in a PFI mill to 400m.l.csf freeness level. Handsheets were made from the refined reed pulps for measuring strengths. Screen yield and kappa number of soda pulp were about similar to kraft pulp. NSSC pulp has lower kappa number than the soda at the equivalent screen yield. Energy consumption for beating from kraft, soda and NSSC pulps reduced respectively. Initial freeness of reed pulp was near to hardwood typical, thus good drainage and runnability on reed papermaking is expectable. The physical properties of reed handsheets were higher than newsprint and fluting pulps of Mazandaran Company. Overall, soda and NSSC reed pulps can be used in producing of newsprint and fluting papers based on the properties.
